Adding green space to communities increases property values and improves quality of life. Otter Creek, in Oregon, Ohio, is an example of how restoration efforts transformed a local waterway into a beloved community trail. The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. (MSG) provided the planning and design for an urban runoff capture and treatment wetland system for the 43-acre watershed that includes Otter Creek. The project included a stormwater treatment system, installation of storm sewer upgrades, parking area, walking path, and landscaping restoration in the Eastmoreland and Euclid Park subdivisions. The 2.1-acre wetland system is heavily vegetated with native emergent and deep water emergent wetland plantings to facilitate nutrient uptake and sedimentation, and create habitat for wildlife while increasing greenspace within the urban neighborhood.
The park is improving the water quality of Otter Creek and Lake Erie by functioning as planned: treating stormwater run-off from the urban subwatershed. The project is detailed in the June 2021 issue of Properties Magazine. See article here: http://digital.propertiesmag.com/publication/?m=15890&i=709971&p=76&ver=html5
