MSG adds Mussel Survey Capabilities
MSG adds Mussel Survey Capabilities
Posted on May 12, 2026 by Lindsay Metzger
By passing the mussel identification test, Nate Tessler expands MSG’s environmental services capabilities. With this certification, MSG can now perform in-house mussel surveys and relocations across Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and Wisconsin. Self-performing this work allows us to better control project schedules, costs, and coordination.
This added capability strengthens our ability to support clients through environmental permitting and compliance, particularly for projects involving aquatic resources and Section 404 permitting.
Throughout the Midwest, many species of freshwater mussels are considered rare or imperiled and are protected from harm through federal and state laws. Since they live on the stream or lake bottom and cannot move quickly, they’re at risk of being harmed when construction impacts waterways. A qualified mussel surveyor (also known as a malacologist) can visit your project, locate mussels, and move them out of harm’s way to prevent any project delays and legal issues associated with harming these creatures.
Have an upcoming project that will impact a stream, pond, lake, or even one of the Great Lakes? Reach out to Nate Tessler, Sally Gladwell or Brandon Hill to learn more about mussel survey requirements for your project.
