Parker Alley behind the Shinola Hotel

Did you know: The Mannik & Smith Group’s (MSG) Detroit engineering team played an important role in developing Detroit’s newest & coolest alleyway located behind the new Shinola Hotel!

MSG’s Detroit team of engineers researched, sourced, and specified the reclaimed brick and concrete borders along the historically-named Parker Alley. The team designed all aspects of the project’s hardscape by sourcing and specifying various surface materials such as concrete pavers, tinted concrete, tree grates, and vault covers. The site presented many challenges including transitions between building and doorway elevations, underground vaults and structures, and numerous ADA-compliant ramps and entrances.

In addition, the team provided permitting assistance by preparing drawings and exhibits during coordination with the City for valet, landscaping, awnings, lighting, outdoor seating, and decorative additions. Detroit MSG team members worked closely and thoughtfully with the owner (Bedrock-Detroit), architect (Kraemer Design Group), and contractor (Barton Malow) to bring the civil plans to life and to make sure that the streetscape would bring the same ambience and atmosphere as the new storefronts, restaurant and hotel.
