Lucas County drivers are enjoying the benefits of the area’s first Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI), designed by MSG for ODOT at the Central Avenue/I-475 interchange. Now open for traffic, the new SPUI improves traffic flow by eliminating conflict points, allowing simultaneous left turns, and reducing the time between signal phases. The $38M project included the widening and reconstruction of 1.8 miles of I-475, 0.15 miles of US 23, and 0.68 miles of US 20, along with lighting and traffic control. Noise walls surrounding the SPUI are stamped with maples leaves to coincide with the logo used by the neighboring City of Sylvania and Sylvania Township, while the bridge deck area has alternating bands of colored concrete with stamped patterns to represent a forest theme tied to the nearby Oak Openings region.
