Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day

We’re celebrating #GirlDay2023 as part of #EWeek2023! Karen Dolliver and Edward Merriman helped introduce students to engineering, including a build-your-own food-based landfill demonstration! They highlighted a 2022 Lake County Solid Waste Facility landfill construction project and discussed the different components for landfill containment and liner systems as well as environmental monitoring and reporting that go with each facility.

The goal is to engage and inspire students. “It’s rewarding to mentor kids,” said Karen Dolliver. “My kids had the opportunity to participate in this program, and I am glad I can support it for other students.”

At MSG, our people are passionate about engineering, with many choosing to become civil engineers. Karen explains, “I wanted a career with a varied work environment with a mix of office and field time. I selected civil engineering versus other kinds of engineering for that reason.”

Karen followed in her siblings’ footsteps to pursue engineering, they were her role models. “I knew the pathway to engineering was something I could do, plus I have always been good at and enjoyed math and science classes in school,” she said.
